On this year’s International Labour Day, it’s urgent that we raise our voices against the abuses faced by workers worldwide. We advocate for a fundamental shift towards establishing dignified working environments across both the public and private sectors, environments that empower individuals to lead balanced lives and pursue their aspirations without the constant specter of exploitation, intimidation, meager wages, and inhumane working conditions.
In today’s world, we’re witnessing a troubling surge in human trafficking, particularly under the guise of enticing work-abroad programs. Many fall victim to these deceptive schemes, only to find themselves deceived, shortchanged, and subjected to severe abuse upon arrival in foreign lands. Such exploitation is utterly intolerable. Thus, we stand in solidarity with humanitarian organizations, calling for improved job opportunities within our own countries and urging the public to be vigilant against their temptations of overseas employment offers that often end in tragedy.
Amidst the recent devastating floods in Kenya, it’s also urgent that the government we work hard to sustain through our hard-earned taxes rise to the occasion to safeguard our lives. Those affected by the floods have an undeniable right to swift evacuation, adequate support for survival, and comprehensive assistance in rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of such a disaster.
Happy Labour Day! Let us remain steadfast in our dedication to not only securing our individual futures but also in fostering a collective commitment to building a fairer society. One where principles of merit, equity, and productivity reign supreme. Together, let’s strive towards a world where every worker’s rights and dignity are upheld, and where the fruits of labor benefit the many, not just the few.
