Going to school in a slum area is challenging. Despite the unconducive environment, poverty hits hard and makes children lack even the most basic things they need to study, such as a pen or a pencil. When a teacher gives a lesson, some children have nothing to write with. When they are given assignments, they cannot complete them because they do not have the tools. If this continues unchecked, many children may lose hope in education and in their future.
This is the reality in Kibera. But there is also hope. Saabiko Group of Friends, a youth-led Community-Based Organization (CBO) in Kibera, has decided to change this story. The members of the group were born and raised in Kibera. They know these challenges well because they faced them too. With the help of others, they managed to rise above and pursue their dreams. Now, they want to give back to the community that shaped them.

Through the Write to Learn campaign, Saabiko Group of Friends will reach 2,000 children between the ages of 6 and 16 on September 27th and October 4th 2025. The children will receive pens and pencils, mentorship, lessons on environmental care, and awareness about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is about giving children hope and reminding them that their dreams are valid.
You can be part of this journey. You can donate stationery, volunteer as a mentor, support logistics to make sure the campaign reaches every child, or spread the word so more people join in.
