Residents of Kaliani Village in Katangi Ward, Yatta Constituency, Machakos County, are calling for urgent intervention over three major challenges: an unsafe bridge, pollution of the Athi River and unreliable electricity supply.
The concerns were raised during a public baraza held on 25th October 2026, convened by the Civil Society Reference Group. The meeting brought together community groups, including Kaliani Beekeepers, Woni Wa Aka Ndiwa and Kathome Group, alongside other residents.
One of the key concerns was a C-shaped bridge whose design has raised questions about its structural strength and safety. One resident expressed his frustration, saying, “Since I was born, I have never seen a bridge that is C-shaped. We want the government to intervene and construct a better bridge for us.”
Residents want the relevant roads authority to inspect the bridge and establish whether it meets the required engineering and safety standards.

The community also raised concerns about pollution of the Athi River, which some households depend on for water. Residents reported that people bathe and defecate in the river, contaminating water that others fetch for domestic use. One woman questioned the situation, saying, “I am just fetching water here, and there is someone bathing just next to me. Isn’t that sewage?” They expressed concern about the health risks, calling for the provision of a borehole. “We want a borehole. We want to be protected,” another resident said. The community is calling on the national and county Ministries of Health and Environment to investigate the pollution, conduct water quality tests and ensure access to safe drinking water.
They also complained about frequent and prolonged electricity outages, which disrupt their daily activities. They want Kenya Power to investigate the interruptions and provide a reliable electricity supply.
The residents are now appealing to Yatta MP Hon. Robert Basil Ngui, Katangi MCA Hon. Felix Mutunga Ngui and Machakos Governor Hon. Wavinya Ndeti to intervene. They are also calling on all relevant government agencies and development stakeholders to address the concerns.
The community wants a safe bridge, clean water and reliable electricity. These are essential services that deserve urgent attention.
