We are delighted to have participated in the two-day UNESCO Youth Hackathon held on the 28th and 29th of August 2024, which brought together over 400 young people from 91 countries worldwide. The primary objective of the Hackathon was to empower innovation and youth-led initiatives towards enhancing Media and Information Literacy (MIL) among digital content creators and influencers in the information landscape. Additionally, the event sought to provide solutions to the challenges posed by artificial intelligence.
Key subjects learnt included:
- Seeing through Your Media and Information Literacy Lens: Basic Perspectives
- Empowering Global Youth to Multiply Media and Information Literacy Competencies
- AI Ethics Lab: From Concepts to Real-World Applications
- Understanding Climate Disinformation/Misinformation and its Social and Economic Consequences
- How Social Media Influencers Are Reshaping the Media Landscape
- Design Thinking for Digital Innovators
- Code Your Voice: Unlocking Digital Media Literacy Through Coding
The sessions were facilitated by the UNESCO team alongside young changemakers with practical experiences from around the globe. The discussions were both engaging and informative, providing us with valuable insights into the evolving media landscape and the ethical considerations surrounding artificial intelligence.
We are immensely grateful to have been part of this transformative initiative. The Hackathon has not only broadened our understanding but also formed a strong foundation as we gear up for Global MIL Week in Amman, Jordan.
