Our environment is calling for help, and it’s up to us, the youth of Kenya, to answer that call. We have the energy, creativity, and determination to make a difference, starting with embracing measures towards zero waste.
One easy step we can take is saying no to single-use plastics. Instead of grabbing that plastic water bottle, opt for a reusable one. Think about the sea turtles and dolphins choking on plastic bags. Thanks to facilities like Karura Forest, the Nairobi Arboretum and Michuki Park where single-use plastics are banned. Let’s join hands to clean up our parks, streets and beaches to protect our natural ecosystem.
Furthermore, supporting local businesses that promote sustainable practices is a step forward. Look for eco-friendly brands that use recyclable packaging or offer refillable options. For instance, the “Bring Your Own Bag” movement encourages shoppers to use reusable bags when shopping. It should not be like in the past growing up the village when the only way to feel like one had bought something new was if you saw them with a new bag.
Additionally, let’s refrain from dropping banana peelings, plastic wrappers, or food packaging on the streets. Instead, dispose of them properly in designated bins or carry them until we find a suitable place for disposal.
In addition to personal responsibility, let’s advocate for improved policies and infrastructure for waste management, such as comprehensive recycling programs, waste collection centers, strict anti-littering regulations, incentives for sustainable packaging, and public education campaigns. These measures will contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment for all.
By adopting these measures and championing sustainable innovations, we can play a key role in transitioning towards a zero waste society because waste doesn’t just destroy our ecosystem, it is also ugly, it ruins our surroundings and brings down our quality of life.
So, let’s get started! Every positive little thing we do adds up to a cleaner, greener Kenya. Together, we can make a real difference.
Happy Zero Waste Day 2024!
