We joined Action Aid Kenya in a forum to discuss the existing policy challenges in the education sector, particularly in higher learning.
Boniface Harrison shared key insights, including:
1. The need for a predictable funding model to provide clarity to citizens, unlike the current situation where the funding model has been changing for the past two years.
2. That it is important to make all citizens the cornerstone of every policy formulation. Public participation must be enhanced to ensure that education policies reflect the aspirations of the people especially parents and guardians unlike the existing situation where the government has been over reliant on the opinions of only the student leaders and vice-chancellors.
3. That it is necessary for education policies to uphold fairness at the highest standards. Policies should be carefully implemented to avoid creating gaps and marginalization through discriminatory banding based on social status.
4. That the Ministry of Education in Kenya should be well-resourced to establish infrastructure in schools, instead of relying on elected Members of Parliament, which often leads to political interference that marginalizes certain areas through corruption.
5. That effective monitoring and evaluation of teachers is needed to ensure quality delivery of skills and knowledge in learning institutions.
We support these education efforts because we believe education is a powerful tool to empower people with knowledge and help them lead more purposeful lives.
