Over the past few weeks, MuemAction Post, alongside other youth-led organizations, has been engaged in an intensive process of writing policy briefs at Kenya’s globally recognized think tank, the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA). The briefs will be featured at the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), the highest decision-making forum on global climate issues under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The conference will take place from November 11th to 22nd, 2024, in Baku, Azerbaijan
What is a Policy Brief?
A policy brief is a short document that explains a challenging issue and provides recommendations on how to solve it. It is meant to inform policymakers and other stakeholders about a problem and enable them to make decisions based on clear facts.
In our case, we prepared policy briefs on the challenges youth are facing in climate action and the creation of green jobs. Green jobs refer to employment opportunities and business ventures that contribute to preserving or restoring the environment, such as jobs in renewable energy, energy efficiency, waste management, circular economy and climate-smart agriculture.
Why are Policy Briefs Important?
Policy briefs are important because they help decision-makers understand complex issues and take action. For real social change to happen, decisions need to be backed by clear policies that can be put into practice. A well-written policy brief helps guide those decisions.
Where Can You Read Some Policy Brief Samples?
You can find some examples of policy briefs at the KIPPRA repository [Click here].
How Can You Be Involved?
To get involved in writing policy briefs, develop a passion for research and solving societal challenges through informed action. Opportunities such as research assistant positions, policy writing and analysing, and other related roles can help you gain experience in the field. You can also access funding opportunities for projects focused on policy development and research. Engaging in these activities allows you to contribute to meaningful change while building a career in policy-making and research.
We are grateful to the KIPPRA team for their kind guidance and support throughout the process towards becoming what we liked to refer to as young think tanks. To our colleagues, we had a busy but fun time, full of great moments. We appreciate the teamwork and looking forward to more collaborations and even more success in the future!
