We’re delighted by the decision of the National Assembly of Kenya to reject the Mung Beans (Ndengu) Bill 2022 at the Second Reading stage on 24th September 2024 after the bill was found insufficient, inconsiderate and unworthy.
This came after we, young farmers from Makueni, Machakos, Taita-Taveta and myself from Kitui County, expressed our dissatisfaction with the bill in a petition submitted to the National Assembly on 10th September 2024, as you may know.
We are grateful to the members of Parliament for standing up in defense of local smallholder Ndengu farmers in Kenya.
We also call upon the Kitui County senator, who despite knowing that a majority of his constituents rely on Ndengu as a cash crop and have historically suffered in the hands of unregulated brokers, he chose to sponsor this bill without keenly considering the people’s interests. We urge him to demonstrate care and thoughtfulness in the future when addressing critical issues that affect our lives.
Leaders must prioritize the real needs and welfare of the people they represent.
Moving forward, while we acknowledge this milestone, we remain committed to pursuing legislation that protects and empowers smallholder Ndengu farmers.
Thank you.
