After participating in the 3rd Annual Climate Justice Camp by Roots in Tanzania last year, we discovered a profound initiative in the program — the LIVErary. This unique space allows people to learn about climate justice and stories of resilience by listening to personal experiences of individuals, known as Living Books, while those who listen are the Readers.

The session typically takes place at night in an open, ambient setting like a garden. Before the session, each Living Book shares a synopsis and title of their story, serving as the “book cover.” These are printed and displayed in an open space where Readers can browse and choose which “book” they’d like to listen to.
When night falls, the setup is simple yet deeply immersive. Stories are told in circles, with Readers seated on Maasai Shukas and Living Books on haystacks, surrounded by festoon lights that create an intimate atmosphere. Then, the storytelling begins.
Inspired by this, we saw the need to bring this concept home and create a space where people connect more naturally through personal stories of struggle, passion, resilience amidst devastating effects of climate change and determination in pursuit of meaningful change in their communities. Everyone has a unique story, and every story matters.
This is why we collaborated to organize the first-ever LIVErary Nairobi, Kenya Edition at the Nairobi Arboretum, a calming, natural environment where storytellers shared deep, heartfelt experiences, and listeners found strength and inspiration in their words.
The session also featured engaging activities such as karaoke and games, allowing participants to unwind and bond. Additionally, we shared the inspiring journey of how the LIVErary became a signature program under Roots Organization, a moment that was both emotional and enlightening as to how climate change has affected communities around the world.
Moments during the LIVErary Nairobi Edition:

The LIVErary is a free space for self-expression, where personal experiences can shine a light of hope for those who feel alone in their struggles. It fosters camaraderie and resilience, empowering individuals to embrace their journey, unlock their potential, and contribute to positive change in their communities.
