From the heart of Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs), the Green North-Eastern Initiative (GNEI) took center stage at the 3rd Annual Global Climate Justice Camp in Tanzania, where they showcased their work in tackling climate change and building resilience. Led by Rukia Ahmed, Shamsa Shurie, and Miftah Idris, these inspiring young people shared firsthand stories of the struggles their communities face and the actions they’re taking to make a difference.
The Story Behind GNEI

Rukia Ahmed, the founder and executive director of GNEI, began her journey as a climate champion at a tender age, back when she was still in secondary school. Her dedication and passion for environmental advocacy has been nothing short of extraordinary, propelling her into global platforms such as COP27. As someone who has lived through the harsh realities of climate change, her voice and leadership have become essential in shaping conversations around climate resilience, particularly in pastoral communities that face frequent droughts and resource scarcity.
Sharing Stories of Struggle and Hope

On the first day of the camp, GNEI held a powerful session called Stories of Struggle and Resilience. They shared deeply personal accounts of how climate change is affecting pastoral communities in Northern Kenya, especially through severe droughts and water shortages. These communities often face conflicts over dwindling resources, and people are in need of long-term solutions to survive. As GNEI explained, “Sometimes if you tell them you will give them water, they don’t accept because they ask how long they can rely on the water you’re giving them.” Their stories highlighted the urgent need for sustainable solutions that go beyond short-term relief.
Showcasing GNEI’s Work

GNEI also participated in the Initiative Fair, an interactive space where they showcased their community-centered projects and engaged with global leaders. The fair provided an opportunity for initiatives around the world to share best practices, collaborate with others, and further advocate for the critical work being done to protect their respective communities from the devastating effects of climate change.
A Personal and Inspirational Moment

In one of the most intimate and moving moments of the camp, Rukia Ahmed took part in the Liveray Session, where she shared her personal story. Speaking candidly, she recounted her own struggles and the emotional toll that climate change has taken on her community and herself. Yet, despite the hardships, Rukia’s resolve and purpose have only grown stronger. Her journey, filled with pain and triumph, left many participants inspired to follow their own paths in the fight for climate justice.
Youth as Agents of Change

A key session at the camp focused on The Role of Youth in Building Climate-Resilient Communities. Young leaders, including the GNEI team, shared real-life strategies for creating safer and more sustainable communities in the face of climate change. Through group discussions and case studies, it became clear that young people are ready and willing to take on the challenges ahead.
Brian Seroney, the Director of Operations at Isisa Limited, brought a fun and innovative twist to the conversation by introducing their youth-led project in edible tableware. With a bit of humor, he explained, “After you’re done with your meal, you can eat the plate too!” This creative solution is not just a clever idea—it’s also helping to reduce pollution in Kenya by cutting down on single-use plastics.
Additionally, Boniface Harrison, Executive Director of MuemAction Post, spoke about Leveraging Digital Media for Climate Action. Drawing from his work, he shared practical ways that young people can use digital tools to raise awareness and push for action on climate issues. His insights were both informative and inspiring, showing how technology can play a big role in climate activism.
Leaving a Lasting Impact
By the end of the camp, GNEI had made a lasting impression on participants from around the world. Their stories of struggle and resilience, combined with their innovative solutions left many inspired and motivated to take action in their own communities. The team’s dedication to building a sustainable future for Northern Kenya serves as a reminder that with passion, determination, and collaboration, change is possible.
